Today, Hindus across Nepal and India are celebrating Rishi Panchami, a day dedicated to paying homage to the seven great sages, the Saptarishi. Observed on the fifth day of Bhadra Shukla Paksha, this auspicious festival holds special significance, particularly for women who perform rituals to purify themselves of any menstrual impurities.
The Saptarishi—Vashishtha, Kashyapa, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Bharadvaja—are revered for their immense wisdom and spiritual power. On this day, devotees wake up early, take a holy bath in sacred rivers or ponds, and perform puja with great reverence. The rituals involve offerings of milk, curd, honey, and fruits to the sages, symbolizing purity and devotion.
In many households, women observe a fast and offer prayers seeking forgiveness for any unintentional sins. The day serves as a reminder of living a life of virtue, discipline, and respect for ancient wisdom. The puja and fasting are believed to cleanse the soul and bring spiritual upliftment.
As we honor the Rishis today, may their wisdom continue to guide us toward righteousness and peace.
